hey mates of the throw-away-society out there,

it’s always shocking how much fucking damn PLASTIC TRASH (sorry for my rude expression) I take out day by day. (okaaay, supposed to take out…, sorry mum).

That’s the reason why (as part of a self-imposed zero waste – English project) I’ve tried to get rid off plastic (or waste in general)
for one week

I really tried hard to do my best. I’m definitely gonna adapt some of my new experiences in my everyday life, because also little changes matter 🙂

 

THE RULES of zero waste

  • no plastic waste (packaging, PET bottles, etc.)
  • no cans as well
  • no new plastic purchases (cosmetics etc.)

           → trying new (better?) alternatives

 

FOOD

1. grocery shopping without plastic (@a conventional supermarket & farmer’s market)

That was easier than I expected. I put some loose fruit and vegetables in the cart, some pickled stuff and legumes in jars…gonna use pasta etc. from our supply at home (lil’ cheater?) Additionally I visited our farmer’s market and a specific store for unpacked goods in Nuremberg

 

2. holy jars and boxes

Instead of a PET bottle I went for an old smoothie bottle this week. Water tastes so much better out of  glass, but so freaking heavy 🙁 My food was put in a lunch box … yes made of plastic, but not wasted. The next box is made of recyclable material. I promise.

 

3. DIY

I tried to cook and prepare as much as I could. I’d even found a yogurt machine (haha our cellar is a wonderland) and made some bomb (!) soy yoghurt by myself. (bc basic food numero uno) Welcome to Lara’s Yogurt Factory!! 🙂

 

4. Zero Hero ‘unpackaged shop’

You get everything you need: loose vegetables / fruits, cereal, pasta, spices, candy, nuts,oils … only from suspenders. Organic (and/ or local) and without any packaging.

There’s also a deli counter with dairy products, tofu and baked goods and a small corner with soaps, shampoo, lotions etc. You pay by weight and bring your own jars and boxes with you, perfect if you only need just a small or specific amount of something.

 

I bought some nuts, chocolate, legumes, a few tomatoes and heavenly banana chips 🙂
The prices can be compared with prices of a normal organic store.

 

BEAUTY

1. keep it simple

Beauty Noob Lara only uses coconut oil anyways. And I replaced shampoo and shower gel with a body and hair soap, that was very unproblematic 🙂

 

2. Make-Up

I did my ‘make-up’ quite normal (‘make-up’ = mascara and concealer for the hardest days… I doubt if you can even call it make-up). In my opinion it would rather be waste throwing that stuff away, so I just kept on using it. But I’m already looking for more sustainable alternatives.

 

3. Dental hygiene

Ok. Let’s talk about the hardest part. Brushing the teeth. I’d bought a bamboo-toothbrush and toothpaste tablets (at Lush), but let’s be real: It’s gross. I need that ultra-smooth feeling on my teeth, my spicy pepperminty flavor and my ultrasonic toothbrush. I guess that’s my personal vice 🙂

 

CLOTHES

1. flea market-seller

I sold some clothes with my mum at a flea market and besides some extra money,  new lives and lovers were given to so many of my old clothes. That’s just wonderful!

2. vintage

Go to flea markets, thrift shops or your granny and get some individual pieces and support sustainability at the same time

 

TRANSPORT

My bike and me are best friends anyways, so that wasn’t something new. But now I feel even better when I ride my bike 🙂

 

CONCLUSION

In my opinion, it’s impossible to live 100% plastic-free. It’s very time-intensive, physical exhausting (biking with 15 jars on the back from store to store. not funny.) You have to be very organised and also need some money. Keeping that up 24/7 for a lifetime? Naw.

Nevertheless, I think the philosophy of Zero Waste is great. I made so many new experiences, reduced my waste of plastic, lived pretty healthy (mealprep, riding the bike, less chemical substances ingested by packages etc.) aaaaand it changed my mindset about my habits of consume completely.

Do I need that necessarily? When I go shopping, my purchase decision is not only about the product and its price anymore, it’s also about the packaging and a conscious decision that I really want something being part of my life. Or not.

 

I will definitely change so many habits in my everyday life. I’m very grateful for this experience, I even found a passion for home-made cosmetics…and yoghurt ( yoghurt bacteria, best homies )

and I see once again: self-reflection is the key to almost everything ♥
